Princess Kate wore a Catherine Walker dress coat with a hat by Juliette Botterill with an Irish Guards regiment brooch and pearl drop earrings that previously belonged to the late Queen Elizabeth. Meanwhile, her daughter was complementary in an paler aqua look with her hair pulled back in a go-to style: braids.

Trooping the Colour is also referred to as the King’s Birthday Parade, during which a performance by the Household Division of the British Army recognizes the sovereign’s public birthday — even though the King won’t actually turn 77 until Nov. 14.

This year’s event, the third Trooping of King Charles’ reign, fell exactly five months after Princess Kate shared that she was in “remission” from cancer on Jan. 14.

The Princess of Wales has attended every major Trooping the Colour celebration since marrying Prince William in 2011. Last year’s parade was one of the few royal events she attended after announcing that she was receiving cancer treatment in March 2024.

The 2024 parade was a significant event for the Princess of Wales in more ways than one. Not only did she make a rare public outing amid her cancer journey, but she also continued her trend of upcycling past fashions with a statement bow. She donned a white Jenny Packham dress with black trim that she’d previously worn to a May 2023 event, adding a jaunty, striped bow on the neckline. The look garnered praise from many royal experts.

“Over the last year, the bow is the one accessory that she’s repeatedly added, and it’s totally transformed previous outfits into something that looks quite different,” Bethan Holt, fashion director at the Telegraph, told PEOPLE at the time. “It was a safe option, but she had fun with it, upcycling it with the bow.”

The look was a classy, yet slightly understated, diversion from Princess Kate’s past Trooping fashion. In 2023, she wore a bright green long-sleeved dress with blue-and-silver square buttons by Singaporean designer Andrew Gn, pairing the look with a matching Philip Treacy hat and a pair of Princess Diana’s sapphire and diamond earrings.

In June 2018, less than two months after giving birth to Prince Louis, Kate made a statement in an ice blue Alexander McQueen dress and coordinated Juliette Botterill hat, matching with her stepmother-in-law, Camilla, then the Duchess of Cornwall, as well as Queen Elizabeth.

Kate has returned to life as a working royal since announcing her remission in January 2025. Following her treatment at the Royal Marsden Hospital, one of her first announcements was that she had joined husband Prince William as a patron of the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust.

“It is a relief to now be in remission and I remain focussed on recovery. As anyone who has experienced a cancer diagnosis will know, it takes time to adjust to a new normal. I am however looking forward to a fulfilling year ahead,” Princess Kate said in part in a statement at the time. “There is much to look forward to. Thank you to everyone for your continued support.”

The Princess of Wales has since resumed a regular schedule, overseeing some of Prince George’s first royal duties, celebrating the 80th anniversary of VE Day, commissioning naval ships in Scotland, and much more.

“She is the MVP of the royal family, and no one knew when she was going to come back,” royal historian Amanda Foreman previously told PEOPLE about how Princess Kate is reclaiming her royal role.

Ailsa Anderson, former press secretary to the late Queen Elizabeth, agreed, telling PEOPLE, “Fast-forward, and what a difference a year makes. She’s even more beloved in the nation’s hearts than she was.”
