The Princess of Wales gave her first speech since being diagnosed with cancer. She shared her views and thoughts on earning money and balancing life.

In her first public address in over two years, since disclosing her cancer diagnosis, the Princess of Wales delivered a powerful message that underscored the importance of care, tenderness, and early childhood development.

Speaking at the Future Workforce Summit in London, the Princess referenced her deep-seated beliefs, stemming from her work with the Centre for Early Childhood, and expressed her gratitude to those in attendance for their support.

Her speech centered on a key idea: the enduring effect of love experienced during a child’s early years.

She stated: “The love we feel in our earliest years fundamentally shapes who we become and how we thrive as adults.”

She explained that love is “the first and most essential bond” and clarified how “it is also the invisible thread, woven with time, attention and tenderness, through consistent, nurturing relationships which creates the grounded and meaningful environments around a child.”

The home, she added, should be “the space where love, safety and rhythm enable a child to thrive.” While the home is the primary environment, she emphasized that we all exist within “ecosystems”—families, communities, and workplaces—that influence us just as strongly. “Imagine a world where each of these environments were built on valuing time and tenderness just as much as productivity and success,” she told delegates.

Turning specifically to business leaders, the Princess openly advocated for a change in workplace culture. She said: “As business leaders you will face the daily challenge of finding the balance between profitability and having a positive impact. But the two are not, and should not be incompatible.”

Her challenge stemmed from the conviction that caring work, which is often “quiet” and “invisible,” deserves acknowledgement and respect. “I believe in restoring the dignity to the quiet, often invisible work of caring, of loving well, as we look to build a happier, healthier society.”

The event, held in a tall London building offering a panoramic view of the city, marked a significant moment in the Princess’s return to public duties, almost two years after she revealed her cancer diagnosis and shared recovery updates via social media. Her appearance highlights the continuation of her advocacy. She founded the Centre for Early Childhood before her illness and is now resuming her public role.

In her concluding remarks, she restated the connection between care and community: “Every act of care creates community because we are all essentially weavers of the same fabric.” Speaking on behalf of all caregivers, she said: “Every child deserves respect and safety, and everyone who cares deserve recognition and appreciation.”
