In 2005, four bombs were detonated on London’s public transport network during the morning rush hour.
The country was left reeling in what became the deadliest terrorist attack on British soil. Nearly 800 people were wounded in the attacks on three underground trains and a double-decker bus.
At the memorial, Prince William laid a bouquet of white flowers at the foot of the monument.
He was photographed bowing his head in reflection and also standing alongside survivors and bereaved families for a minute’s silence. The names of all 52 victims were read aloud during the ceremony.
Following the service, William attended a private reception. He met with families of the victims and survivors. The event was also acknowledged in a statement shared by the royal family on social media.
“Today, on the 20th Anniversary of the 7th July bombings, we remember all those affected by the terrible events of that day,” they wrote.
“The Prince of Wales joined survivors and family members of victims at a service at the 7 July Memorial Gardens in Hyde Park. The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, representing His Majesty The King, attended a memorial service at St Paul’s Cathedral.”
The service at Hyde Park was one of two major commemorations held across London.
Earlier in the day, Prince Edward and Duchess Sophie attended a remembrance service at St. Paul’s Cathedral.

King Charles pays tribute
Meanwhile, King Charles, 76, also issued a personal message of remembrance.
The king also praised the courage of first responders and the resilience of the British people.
“Today, we mark twenty years since the tragic events of 7th July 2005. My heartfelt thoughts and special prayers remain with all those whose lives were forever changed on that terrible summer’s day,” King Charles wrote.
“We remember with profound sadness the 52 innocent people who were killed in senseless acts of evil, and the enduring grief of their loved ones,” he continued. “We recall, too, the hundreds more who carry physical and psychological scars. And pray that their suffering may ease as the years pass.”
The monarch also honoured the actions of emergency services and citizens who responded selflessly in the face of terror.
“The selfless bravery of our emergency services, transport workers and fellow citizens who rushed towards danger to help strangers reminds us of the very best of humanity in the face of the very worst.”
