The Prince and Princess of Wales originally moved from London to Windsor in 2022.
The Prince and Princess of Wales are getting ready to move their family into a new home.
After relocating from Kensington Palace in London to Adelaide Cottage in Windsor three years ago, Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales are moving to a new home a short distance away from their current residence later this year.
Kensington Palace confirmed that the family will be moving to Forest Lodge, another property located on the Windsor Estate.
A royal source told NBC News, “Windsor has become their home. However, over the last few years while they have lived at Adelaide Cottage there have been some really difficult times.”
“Moving gives them an opportunity for a fresh start and a new chapter; an opportunity to leave some of the more unhappy memories behind,” the source added. “This is a move for the long-term. They see it as their forever home.”
The family’s 2022 move was an opportunity for William, the former Kate Middleton and their three children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis to test out a different location and see if it would be a good fit for the family.
Over the years, they’ve been able to settle to life in Windsor and George, Charlotte and Louis are content at their school.
Living in Windsor has also given William and Kate the opportunity to spend time with their children, while also being able to do their work as senior members of the royal family, with the home just over an hour outside of London.
The move from Adelaide Cottage to Forest Lodge is intended to be a long-term move for the family, who will continue to have no live-in staff. Additionally, the move will be funded privately, and market rent will be paid for the property.
Since their move from London to Windsor in 2022, the family has experienced numerous life changes, including the death of Queen Elizabeth II on Sept. 8, 2022.
William’s father, King Charles III, was later diagnosed with an unspecified form of cancer in February 2024, giving his first comments about the “frightening experience” more than a year later in April 2025.
Kate also faced a series of health issues, including her own cancer diagnosis. After undergoing abdominal surgery in January 2024, she announced in March 2024 that she was diagnosed with cancer and was in the “early stages” of preventive chemotherapy.
By September 2024, Kate announced that her chemotherapy treatment was complete, and she would return to making public appearances. In January 2025, Kate shared that her cancer was in remission, and she would continue to “remain focused on recovery.”
William and Kate have given rare insights into how the family was coping amid her health issues over the last year.
Sky News reported in November 2024 that the prince described 2024 as the “hardest year” of his life. The following month, Kate gave rare remarks about her cancer journey, telling singer Paloma Faith, “This year has been full of surprises.”
Kate also got candid about her experience with cancer in July 2025 when speaking to patients at a hospital in Essex, per BBC, calling the period after treatment a “rollercoaster.”
“It’s not one smooth plane, which you expect it to be,” she said. “But the reality is it’s not. You go through hard times.”
