âWho knows if Iâm even your real father?â Harry claims King Charles would joke
Prince Harry addresses several rumors and drops many bombshells in his memoir, âSpare,â including the longtime rumor that his âreal fatherâ isnât King Charles, but Major James Hewitt, who was his late mother Princess Dianaâs former lover.
In the book, which was officially released on Tuesday, the Duke of Sussex claimed Charles would make jokes about the speculation.
âPa liked telling stories, and this was one of the best in his repertoire,â Harry, 38, wrote. âHeâd always end with a burst of philosophizing ⌠Who knows if Iâm really the Prince of Wales? Who knows if Iâm even your real father?â
âHeâd laugh and laugh, though it was a remarkably unfunny joke, given the rumor circulating just then that my actual father was one of Mummyâs former lovers: Major James Hewitt.â he continued. âOne cause of this rumor was Major Hewittâs flaming ginger hair, but another cause was sadism.â
While Harry didnât find the joke to be funny, he said âtabloids readers were delighted by the ideaâ that he was possibly not Charlesâ son, noting that people âcouldnât get enough of this âjoke.’â
âMaybe it made them feel better about their lives that a young princeâs life was laughable,â he added, before pointing out how the timelines donât add up. âNever mind that my mother didnât meet Major Hewitt until long after I was born.â
Prince Harry was born in September 1984, while Princess Diana and Hewitt reportedly didnât even meet until 1986. Throughout the years, Hewitt has continued to deny the claims.
