The Call That Changed Everything
Dr. Jean-Marc Troadec, one of the first trauma specialists to arrive at the scene, still remembers the moment he was dispatched.
“We were told there had been a high-speed crash involving VIPs. We didn’t know who it was until we got there,” he recalled.
When his team reached the wreckage inside the Pont de l’Alma tunnel, the scene was chaotic. Paparazzi hovered. Police were trying to secure the area. And in the crumpled black Mercedes, Princess Diana was critically injured.
Inside the Tunnel
Dr. Troadec remembers seeing Diana conscious but in extreme distress. “She was speaking, she was aware… but fading,” he said. “We began immediate life-saving measures inside the car, because moving her too soon could have made things worse.”
According to the doctor, Diana had sustained severe internal injuries, including a rare and devastating tear to a major vein near her heart.
“It is an injury you almost never see — and almost never survive,” he explained.
The Fight to Save Her Life
In the ambulance, Diana’s condition rapidly deteriorated. Dr. Troadec and his team performed emergency procedures en route to Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital, including direct cardiac massage. “We were doing everything possible,” he said. “But the damage inside was catastrophic.”
