The Princess of Wales is wearing an heirloom necklace at the Duchess of Kent’s funeral today.

The Princess of Wales paid a deeply poignant tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II today, choosing one of Her Majesty’s most recognisable jewels for the funeral of the Duchess of Kent at Westminster Cathedral. Kate, 43, stepped out alongside her husband Prince Wiliam, in a fitted black coatdress with a veiled pillbox hat, her look anchored by the four-strand pearl choker with a diamond clasp – a piece that once belonged to the late Queen.

The necklace, a gift to Elizabeth II from the Japanese government in the 1970s, has become one of the most sentimental heirlooms in the royal jewellery vault. Not only was it worn by the Queen on countless occasions, it was also famously loaned to Diana, the former Princess of Wales, cementing its place in royal fashion history.

By selecting the choker for such a historic service, Kate balanced solemnity with symbolism.

Pearls are traditionally associated with mourning dress, yet the choice of this particular piece also spoke to her role as custodian of the late Queen’s legacy.

Teamed with pearl drop earrings, the effect was both elegant and steeped in meaning and royal history.

Kate’s decision to wear one of Queen Elizabeth II’s most treasured pieces also carried a poignant connection to the Duchess of Kent herself.

Katharine was not only married to the late Queen’s first cousin, the Duke of Kent, but was regarded as one of the most longstanding and respected members of the royal circle.

Known for her warmth and public service, she was held in deep affection by Elizabeth II. By choosing a jewel so closely tied to the late monarch.

Princess Kate subtly honoured both women – reflecting the Queen’s enduring presence and her close family bond with the Duchess whose life was being remembered. Although it is not the first time the Princess has turned to this necklace.

She wore it to Queen Elizabeth’s funeral in 2022, and again at the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral the year before, making it a jewel she now consistently reserves for the most significant moments of remembrance.

Prince William and his wife joined King Charles and other senior royals, who led mourners for the first Catholic funeral of a royal since the Reformation.

However, Queen Camilla was notably absent as she was forced to pull out due to ill-health at the final hour.
