King Charles ‘makes it clear Prince Harry can’t be half-in, half-out’ royal amid return hopes

King Charles has reportedly made it “absolutely clear” that Prince Harry will never be allowed to resume royal duties in a “half-in, half-out” capacity.

The 76-year-old monarch and his son Harry, 41, reunited earlier this month for a private tea at Clarence House in London. It marked their first face-to-face interaction in 19 months.

While some royal watchers saw the meeting as a potential reset amid their strained relationship, insiders claim that any chance of the Duke of Sussex resuming a part-time royal role has been firmly shut down.

“The king is a forgiving man but has been absolutely clear in upholding his late mother’s decision that there cannot be ‘half-in, half-out’ members of the working royal family,” a palace source told the Mail on Sunday.

The publication previously reported that “high level talks are underway to gradually bring King Charles and Prince Harry together in a public show of unity for the first time in at least six years”.

However, it seems insiders have shut down this speculation.

The king is a forgiving man but has been absolutely clear in upholding his late mother’s decision.

“Whoever is behind [those reports] seems to have mistaken a brief tea and a slice of cake for the Treaty of Versailles,” the insider said.

Harry lives in California with his wife, Meghan Markle, and their two children. He stepped down as a working royal in 2020.

According to a source close to the duke, any conversation about returning to royal life was “put to bed years ago”.

“The duke has made it clear that the focus has to be on his dad,” the source reportedly said.

Harry and Charles’ meeting was a ‘PR push’
Meanwhile, royal commentator Ingrid Seward called the reunion between Charles and Harry a “massive PR move” designed to boost the duke’s relevance.

“Harry needs the stardust of his father. He needs people to see him as the son of a king,” she told The Sun.

“His earning power is related to who he is. Without being the royal he is, Harry would not be interesting to anyone in California.”

Ingrid also pointed to the duke’s reported multi-million-dollar deals with Netflix and other platforms as motivation for maintaining visibility, especially in the US, where a fractured royal family image doesn’t play well.

“This is a big, big PR push. Harry was finally all smiles and charm, reminiscent of himself of old,” she added.

Notably absent from Harry’s UK visit was his brother, Prince William. According to royal author Valentine Low, the Prince of Wales is approaching the family rift with a firm stance of his own.

“William is very different from his father. I think essentially, William is very aware of what he regards as mistakes his father has made. He’s not going to repeat them,” Valentine said on GB News.

Harry recently expressed a desire to spend more time in the UK. He told The Guardian that his recent trip “brought that closer” in reference to bringing his children back to visit.
