Mariah Carey seemed to snub Meghan Markle when the pop legend was asked about her experiences with members of the royal family recently.

Hitmaker Mariah, 56, is performing at Heritage Live at the royal estate of Sandringham tomorrow (Friday, August 15). And ahead of her gig in Norfolk, she recalled her regal interactions during an interview on Hits Radio.

However, despite previously participating in one of the Duchess of Sussex’s own recording projects, the Hero and Fantasy singer failed to acknowledge Meghan when asked if she’d ever met any royals.

The reported slight comes after Mariah and Meghan debated the merits of ‘being a diva’ nearly three years ago.

She had been a guest on Meghan’s Archetypes podcast – but that appearance may have slipped her mind.

Mariah responded to the question she was asked during the most recent radio interview: “Fergie. I thought she was cool.”

Over on X, social media users seemed to pick on the apparent snub – and posted their amusement over Mariah’s reaction.

“Maybe Mariah got them confused?” one X user pondered. “Meghan is the next-gen version of Sarah, after all.”

“Oh, the burn!” joked a second. Another person floated the possibility: “Mariah Carey doesn’t see Meghan as royal?”

And a fourth chuckled: “Comedy gold. Mariah Carey was asked in an interview if she had met any of the royal family, she replied: ‘Only Fergie, she was cool.’”

Meghan’s repsonse to Mariah’s ‘diva’ comment

Back in August 2022, when Mariah appeared on Archetypes, she chatted to Meghan for an episode titled “The Duality of Diva”.

At one point, Mariah indicated Meghan is a “diva” herself. However, she also clarified she was referring to Meghan’s “gorgeous ensembles”, rather than her demeanour.

“I think that’s really important for people to remember that there might be this persona, and yes, the diva thing, we can play into,” Meghan suggested at one point as she interrogated the meaning of the word diva. She also added: “It’s not something I connect to.”

However, Mariah countered by saying: “You give us diva moments sometimes, Meghan.”

Meghan replied: “What kind of diva moments do I give you?”

To which Mariah responded: “Don’t act like…” before trailing off. She went on to insist: “A lot of it is the look. Let’s pretend that you weren’t so beautiful and didn’t have the whole thing, and didn’t often have gorgeous ensembles. You wouldn’t maybe get as much diva.”

But Meghan maintained: “That’s the thing, I associate it differently.”

She also highlighted how she felt Mariah was complimenting her as the duchess reflected: “My fangirling was tempered today. I kind of think she could tell. But that aside, it was all going swimmingly, really well, until that moment happened, which, I don’t know about you, but it stopped me in my tracks. When she called me a diva.”

She told listeners: “You couldn’t see me, obviously. But I started to sweat a little bit and started squirming in my chair in this quiet revolt, like ‘wait, no, what, how could you? That’s not true, why would you say that?’”

Admitting her surprise, Meghan continued: “My mind was genuinely just spinning with what nonsense she must have read or clicked on to make her say that. And I just kept thinking, in that moment, was my girl crush coming to a quick demise? Does she actually not see me?

Meghan added: “She meant ‘diva’ as a compliment, but I heard it as a dig, I heard it as the word ‘diva ‘ as I think of it. But in that moment, as she explained to me, she meant it as chic, as aspirational. And how one very charged word can mean something different for each of us. It is mind-blowing to me.”
