I WOKE UP TO FIND MY DOG STARING AT ME—AND THEN I SAW WHAT WAS

I saw it—a pair of eyes staring back at me from the darkness under the bed. My heart skipped a beat, and a surge of adrenaline coursed through my body. I froze, my mind racing to understand what I was seeing.

Murphy let out a low growl, a sound I’d never quite heard from him before. It was a warning, a signal that something was amiss. The eyes blinked once, slowly, and I realized they belonged to a small creature. It was some kind of animal, not a monster or a person. Still, it didn’t belong in my bedroom.

I took a deep breath, trying to calm my racing heart. If Murphy wasn’t attacking, maybe it wasn’t a threat. I slowly got up and reached for my phone on the nightstand, turning on the flashlight function. The sudden burst of light made the shadows under the bed dance, and I heard a rustling sound. Whatever was under there was starting to move.

I pointed the light again, more steadily this time, and got a better view of the creature. It was a raccoon! Its fur was matted and dirty, and it looked just as startled as I felt. How on earth had a raccoon gotten into my house, let alone my bedroom?

Murphy stayed by my side, still tense but not aggressive. I thought quickly about what to do. I remembered reading somewhere that raccoons can be dangerous if they feel cornered, so I didn’t want to scare it into lashing out. I needed to coax it out gently.

I backed away slowly, keeping the light on the raccoon, and opened the bedroom door wider, hoping it would see a way out. Murphy moved aside, his eyes never leaving the creature. I whispered a calm, soothing sound, trying to keep the atmosphere as peaceful as possible.

The raccoon hesitated, its eyes darting between me and Murphy. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, it started to move. It crawled cautiously toward the light, pausing every few moments to look up at us. I held my breath, willing it to keep going.

Eventually, it scurried past me and out the door. Murphy and I followed it down the hallway and to the back door, which I quickly opened. The raccoon paused on the threshold, looking back at us one last time, before it darted out into the freedom of the early morning.
