Meghan Markle’s “vision” of working motherhood didn’t meet her expectations.

“I’ve always wanted to be a mom,” Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, said on a recent episode of her podcast “Confessions of a Female Founder with Meghan,” in which the mother-of-two interviews female entrepreneurs.

“Before I was a mom, I said, ‘Oh gosh, I’m going to give a speech with a baby on my hip,’” she said. “I had a whole vision. And then, you fast-forward — granted, I had a lot of external things happening by the time I had both pregnancies and both babies — but it was not the way I envisioned it.”

Markle shares son Archie, 6, and daughter Lilibet, 3, with her husband Prince Harry. The couple married in 2018 and were working members of the royal family, through the birth of Archie in 2019. In 2020, the couple took a “step back” from royal duties, citing a desire to “become financially independent” and raise their family in both the U.S. and the U.K. Prince Harry later revealed that media scrutiny of his family was harming his mental health.

In 2021, while living in California, Meghan and Harry welcomed their daughter, Lilibet, who they named in honor of Prince Harry’s now-late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II.

On May 19, Markle honored her seventh wedding anniversary by sharing an Instagram photo that showed personal family photos.

“A lifetime of stories,” Markle captioned the image. “Thanks to all of you (whether by our side, or from afar) who have loved and supported us throughout our love story — we appreciate you. Happy anniversary!”

Markle also celebrated Mother’s Day with a message to her children.

“Cheers to juggling it all with joy!” she wrote in a Mother’s Day Instagram post in which she held her children in her arms.

“And to these two gems — who still attempt to climb ‘mama mountain,’ smother me with kisses, and make every day the most memorable adventure,” Markle added. “Being your mom is the greatest privilege of my life.”
