I led the policeman and Mrs. Miller into the living room, my mind racing with questions. Lili held my hand tightly, sensing the tension. The officer took off his hat and glanced at the basket where Marsa lay curled around the puppies. There was a gentle, almost reverent silence as we all looked at the scene.
“Ma’am,” he began, “we’ve received reports of a missing litter of puppies from the local animal shelter. They disappeared a few days ago, and we’ve been searching for them ever since.”
I glanced at Marsa, who was now purring softly, her eyes half-closed in contentment. My heart sank. Could it really be that Marsa had somehow found these puppies and brought them home?
Mrs. Miller cleared her throat, her disapproval evident. “I saw your cat coming and going with those little ones. Thought it was strange, so I called it in.”
I felt a mixture of embarrassment and disbelief. “I assure you, officer, I had no idea she was doing this. I thought she was just wandering around like she usually does.”
The officer nodded, a gentle look in his eyes. “I believe you, ma’am. Cats have strong maternal instincts. It’s not unusual for them to adopt other animals, especially when they sense they’re in need.”
I looked at Marsa once more, feeling a swell of unexpected pride. My quirky tabby had taken on the role of a foster mother, saving these helpless creatures. Yet, the reality of the situation was undeniable—these puppies belonged to the shelter and had to be returned.
“Will they be okay?” Lili asked, her voice small and worried.
The officer smiled reassuringly. “We’ll make sure they are. The shelter will be glad to have them back, and they’ll ensure they get proper care.”
Mrs. Miller, her initial sternness softening, added, “It was quite a sight, really. Your cat’s got a heart of gold.”
I nodded, grateful for her change in tone. “Thank you, both of you, for understanding.”
With gentle hands, the officer gathered the puppies, Marsa watching intently but not interfering. I stroked her fur, whispering, “You did a good thing, Marsa.”
Once the puppies were safely in a carrier, the officer turned to leave. “We’ll keep you updated, ma’am. And thank you for your cooperation.”
As the door closed behind them, the house felt strangely quiet. Marsa nuzzled against my leg, as if seeking reassurance.
Lili looked up at me, her eyes wide with admiration. “Marsa’s like a superhero, isn’t she, Mom?”
I chuckled, ruffling her hair. “Yes, she is. She’s got a bigger heart than we ever knew.”
