Princess Kate Middleton made a surprise second appearance with paratroopers just hours after emotionally opening up about her cancer recovery during an official hospital visit.
On Wednesday (July 3), the Princess of Wales was photographed at Colchester Hospital’s new Wellbeing Garden. During the appearance, Kate candidly discussed the often overlooked emotional toll of post-treatment recovery.
But what wasn’t publicly scheduled was an unexpected visit to the 2 PARA Cultural Day, hosted by the Parachute Regiment and Airborne Forces, a stop she made on her way home.

Wearing the same pinstriped blazer and brown trousers from her hospital appearance, Kate was seen smiling and speaking warmly with soldiers.
Photos of the event were shared by Support Our Paras, the charity supporting the regiment. They revealed the Princess had dropped in briefly but meaningfully.
“The 2 PARA Cultural Day is an opportunity for paratroopers to come together and celebrate the many cultural groups that make up the battalion,” the charity wrote on Instagram. “With food and drink from around the world being served, this event is educational and essential to the battalion’s morale.”
“The day was once again made possible due to funding from @supportourparas. Our Events & Efficiency Manager, Mark, was delighted to talk about our work with those in attendance, which included HRH The Princess of Wales.”
While King Charles is the official Colonel-in-Chief of the Parachute Regiment, Kate herself holds a number of military titles.
These include Colonel of the Irish Guards and Commodore-in-Chief of the Fleet Air Arm.
According to HELLO!, the Princess happened to pass the event on her route home and spontaneously decided to stop by.
Kate opens up about recovery
Earlier that day, during her appearance at Colchester Hospital, Kate had moved patients and staff with her honesty about life after treatment.
Opening up about the lesser-known phase of recovery, she said: “There is a whole phase when you finish your treatment. Everybody expects you to be better, go! But that’s not the case at all.”
She added: “You put on a sort of brave face, stoicism through treatment. Treatment’s done, then it’s like ‘I can crack on, get back to normal’. But actually, the phase afterwards is really, really difficult.”
Describing the importance of support and finding a new normal, Kate shared: “You’re not necessarily under the clinical team any longer. But you’re not able to function normally at home as you perhaps once used to.
“And actually, someone to help talk you through that, show you and guide you through that phase that comes after treatment, I think, is really valuable.”
She described the experience as “life-changing” for patients and families.
Despite missing out on Royal Ascot last month, Kate’s latest appearances highlighted her gradual re-entry into public life.
It also quietly reassured the public that she is beginning to find her new rhythm.
“You have to find your new normal, and that takes time,” she said. “It’s a rollercoaster. It’s not one smooth plane. But the reality is, you go through hard times.”
